A decade ago, Type 2 diabetes was an adults-only disease. Today, childhood obesity, unhealthy eating habits and inactivity are leading to more and more children, as young as nine years of age, being diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes.
The Canadian Diabetes Association has developed a youth program on diabetes prevention and the importance of healthy living in hopes of stopping this frightening trend. Families with children ages 5-10 are invited to join the Association for “The Cellbertons – “What’s Diabetes?” presentation. This animated presentation stars Al, Cheryl, and their son Sheldon Cellberton, a family of body cells, as they learn about diabetes and steps towards prevention. As well, the Association presenter will teach parents and children about healthy lifestyle choices by engaging them in a variety of fun nutrition and fitness activities. Each family will also be given a take home goodie bag!
